Drakes

The Forgotten

Drakes are very similar to Dragons in appearance, only bulkier on average with rougher scales and horns. They’re known for their incredible resistance to arid biomes, having an ability to go without water for up to two weeks- as well as and their tough, fireproof scaling - Drakes are quite the hardy bunch.

Despite their title, however, Drakes are among the most common of races in Arcardia, only ‘forgotten’ since they are largely ostracised by the Dragons... despite them being the original inhabitants of Arcardia before it was colonised by Anerc Katafygio (Anerc). Drakes that reside in Anerc are often working lower class jobs and generally struggle to get by.

Physiology

Despite their short to somewhat average height compared to other races of Arcardia, Drakes generally have a rather sturdy build. They excel in their ability to jog for quite some time without getting tired, being endurance hunters, and they are semi decent at climbing. Though Drakes are known to be awful swimmers. They have large clawed feet and hands, strong, stiff tails often adorned with a tail spade, or sometimes spikes, creating something of a thagomizer, and tough scaling. Their scales, like their horns, are rough and well known for their fire resistance. Drakes are just a physically strong race, it’s hard to get through their scaling, and even their skin is a little tougher than other races. They are also naturally bulkier, regardless of sex.

Drakes don’t vary as much as their dragon cousins. They usually have osteoderms running down their back and tail- and sometimes spines or spikes as well. They can have these spikes on their arms, jaw (under their ears), or legs as well. Their ears are also usually small and they only ever have one pair of horns with a rough, segmented appearance.

In terms of colouration - Drakes have more natural or desaturated colours, like browns or oranges, reds, greys, and blue-ish silvers. Their skin and hair, like most races of Arcardia, generally just come in natural colours the same as humans do.

Drakes are a species adapted to harsh environmental pressures, but there has been evidence uncovered, and histories spoken, about a species of Drake that lived in the cold north regions of Gia. They had thick coats of fur on many parts of their bodies and a shorter build than the Drakes known today. This species has sadly been lost to The Pale.

Abilities

FIRE RESISTANCE ▸ Drakes scales have a natural fire resistance. They can still get burnt, but it takes longer than other races. Their scales and skin are in general quite difficult to break through.

DESERT ADAPTED ▸ Drakes can go without water for up to two weeks, unlike other races that usually can't last more than three days without it.

STAMINA ▸ Drakes are endurance hunters. They can't sprint for long but they can keep up a steady jog for hours ...if they are practiced. Most Drakes don't live in ways that would call for such abilities - they can just go to a local store and buy their food then and there.

Watch the tail! ▸ Drakes can have all sorts of spikes or clubs on their tail, or nothing at all. Either way, you don't want to be hit by the tail of a Drake.

Reproduction

Like humans, Drakes give birth to live young - which means the amount of offspring they typically have is 1-3, with large age gaps. They are vulnerable for the first year or so, relying heavily on their parents. Unlike humans though, the appearance of Drake’s in their early stages of life is somewhat different. They typically locomote on all fours, as their body's anatomy at this stage is better suited for it. They don’t start walking upright until they’re about 2 years old.
